In
the early Fall of 2000, Judith Pothier, disabled and relying upon a
wheelchair for most of her mobility, was obsessed with the need to be
independent. Being an active individual she wanted, among
other
things, to do her own shopping (even if it was in a
wheelchair).
However, living in the Pacific Northwest, she frequently found herself
cold and wet, which intensified her disabilities. After
trying
the traditional blanket that got tangled in the wheels of her chair,
and several other types of lap coverings without much success, she came
up with an idea. Judith found someone who knew how to sew and
who
listened to her as she described what she needed. This
outdoor
covering was the first prototype of what would later become known as
The Ultimate Blanket. Although in the beginning The Ultimate Blanket was developed with people having mobility disabilities in mind, it soon was clear that consumers wanted to use it for other types of outdoor activities that involved cold and inclement weather. First came the Tailgaters who wanted to wear their colors and cheer the team on to victory while being more comfortable; then there were those people who wanted something for Horseback Camping or sitting outside their RV; and the Christmas Parade; and even for Fishing and Hunting. |
