My Fave Blankets and Throws
Topping my list of favorite blankets and throws is a hand woven wool throw. It is in a plaid pattern of browns, tans, and black. The wool is obviously very fine and the throw is lightweight. But my oh my how it keeps me warm on a cold, crisp day! This throw was a wedding present. I've since seen similar works made by the same outfit and they are pricey. I do have to admit that it was a unique wedding gift and the only thing like it that we got. So I guess this might be a hint going out to my readers here: blankets and throws make great wedding gifts!
Second on my fave list of blankets and throws is another throw. This chenille throw is comprised of man made fibers and not lightweight at all. One of the things I like about it is that it does have some weight to it. Yet, it is extremely soft. Sometimes I'm just in the mood to feel the weight for some reason and this blanket does the trick.
Blankets and Throws -- My Standby
Metabolism is a funny thing. It varies widely from people to people and even among the sexes. And as we women age, the hot flashes in the night happen, too. I share all of this to say that I evolved to using only 100% cotton blankets on all my beds at home. Now mind you, I love the "heavenly bed" concept with layer upon layer of textures and thicknesses. But my husband absolutely does NOT! In fact doing some poling of my friends about their blankets and throws preferences and challenges, I hear just about the same thing from them. Their guys just kick them off the bed or push them out of the way. They see them as a nuisance.
My solution was a moderate weight cotton blanket atop the sheet. Then if my kids (or our house guests) slept a bit on the cool side, they could use the bedspread and/or an additional blanket which I kept in the room at the foot of the bed or folded in a drawer or closet for easy access. Honestly, this works for me really well and everyone seems quite a bit happier than when I stacked all the layers as a part of my regular bed-making routine. Plus, it's easier on me!
Options for Blankets and Throws
When I think of blankets and throws, most often my mind immediately goes to baby blankets. There are so many options here that it's hard to even know where to begin. I've seen some of the most luscious creations for babies on recent shopping trips. But I do have a suggestion to consider for those industrious and crafty readers of mine. There will be something mighty special about a baby blanket that you made yourself and gave as a gift to the expectant mother or couple at the shower. While a labor of love, these blankets are not difficult to make. Think about that next time you're challenged with what to give as a baby gift to a special friend or a close friend's child.
Another completely different tact is decorating with blankets and throws. Manufacturing today has made such a variety of styles and options affordable. You might play around with vibrant colors for a change. Just a thought when it comes to sprucing up or doing some home redecorating.
